The Story of Us: Mushy stuff

1. How long have you and your significant other been together?
Our first date was on July 31, 2004. This summer we will celebrate 8 years together.

 2. How did you meet? {What’s your “love” story?}
I worked with his best friend, J.B. We got to know each other after JB transferred into my office from another site. Upon talking, he said that I should meet his friend Chris, that we would get along well. I wasn't too keen on the idea because you know, meeting a guy really was going to cut in on the time I spent watching Trading Spaces with my mom on Friday nights. Huge blow to my social life.

But I went out on a limb (after months of thinking about it) and passed along my phone number....and a picture (upon Chris' request). You don't even know how long it took me to find the "perfect" picture that some random guy I didn't even know was going to look at and judge me on. I must have picked out a good one because he called me on a Tuesday night and again on Thursday and we planned our date for Saturday. Sunday afternoon I left for 17 days to go to Italy with my dad. The night I got back, I was dying to talk to him but didn't want to seem so jumpy about it. Much to my surprise, I received a text from him asking to call him because he needed an excuse to get off the phone with an ex girlfriend.

Yeah, that was a lie. He needed an excuse to talk to me. :Sigh: I love him.

3. If married, how long have you been married?
We have been married for just over 3.5 years. We got married on June 7, 2008. 6.7.08. :)

4. If you are married, where did you get married? Big or small wedding?
We got married at the Lake Natoma Inn in Folsom, CA. We had about 115 people at our wedding and it was the perfect size. I was just thinking about our wedding day and playing it out in my head made me get a little weepy. It was such a perfect day. I can feel the butterflies in my stomach, hear the wind rustling through the trees and picture the look on Chris' face as I walked down the aisle to him.

I have a "no large pictures of ourselves in our house" policy but I might break it to hang this up somewhere. I love this picture. Happiness abounds.

5. Do you have any nick-names that you call one another? Do share!
Sometimes I call him by his full name (Christopher). He calls me by my complete name including my maiden name. I tell him that if he isn't going to call me by my "new" name, I'll change it back. My niece once called him "Uncle Chrissy" so sometimes I bug him by saying that. Our actual nicknames, while nothing scandalous, I'd rather keep to myself. :)

6. Name 3 things you love most about your honey.
First, his sense of humor. He is the funniest person I know. I know everyone says that about their spouse but seriously....my husband is THE JAM. He can make ANYTHING into a humorous situation which is equal parts awesome and annoying. Watch an episode of Project Runway with his once and you will see what I mean. Awesome and annoying. Second, I love that he is close to his family. He has a great relationship with his parents, his younger brother and younger sister. I love how close knit they are and how I've been able to fit into the family so well. Third, his relationship with my family. He jokes around with my sister, he gets along really well with my parents and he scoops up and plays with my nieces as soon as we are in their presence. It warms my heart that he fits in with my family so well and that is a testament to his great and easy going personality. He is #1.

7. Tell us how he proposed?
This could be a long story but I'll keep it short. He told me we were going to have dinner with his parents at a steakhouse in our hometown, which is 40 minutes away from where we lived. My mom called me the morning of the dinner and asked if I could swing by her house to help her fix part of her fence that had fallen down. Random, but whatever. It was President's Day so traffic was a BITCH and it was taking forever to drive to dinner. I was getting impatient, thinking we would be late (I hate being late). I told him that I was going to call my mom and tell her we couldn't stop by, that we would come over after dinner. Chris was driving and he said it was no big deal, that it wouldn't take that long and not to worry about it. This, of course, put me in a bad mood. Perfect!

He parked in the driveway and I jumped out of the car and practically ran to the front door. I swung it open and called out for my mom. To the right of the front door is the dining room and then the living room, open concept type set up so you can see through the dining room to the living room. I looked over and saw my mom, my dad, Chris' mom, dad, sister and brother. HUH???? "What's going on?" Everyone just had these dorky looks on their faces and didn't say anything to me. I walked towards them, still asking what was happening. That's when I felt Chris touch my arm and I realized what was happening. (Ugh, I'm going to start to cry as I type this.) He walked me back over to the front door and proposed in that spot because it was the first place we met, the first place he laid eyes on me and the first place he said he knew he loved me.

This was on a Monday. The Monday before, he got to work and thought "Why haven't I proposed yet?" So he purchased a ring online, called my parents, met with them on Thursday and hatched the plan. He told me the lead up after the proposal while we went to dinner with our family. We drove home that night, picked our wedding date (no kidding. We really did) and went to Coldstone to celebrate. The next day I went to Border's and got a wedding planning binder and a magazine. Bridezilla was created!!!! (Sorry, that wasn't the short version)

 Peek a boo!

8. Is he a flowers and teddy bear kind of guy for v-day, or strawberries, champagne, and rose petals?
He is an electronics guy. He did get me a necklace and earrings for V-day one year. Is it bad that I can't remember other gifts? There have been 7 V-days! I can't recall all of them!

9. Are you a sunset dinner on the beach kind of girl, or pop a movie in and relax on the couch?
Movie and couch. I love the beach but sand...you know, it gets everywhere! I'd much rather be in comfy pj's and watching a movie at home.

10. Tell us one thing you’d like to do with your significant other one day. If you could do anything? Go anywhere?
I want to go to Europe together. Italy or London. Mostly Italy. First he needs to get over the whole walking miles and miles for weeks straight thing but he will move on eventually.

 1. Tell us what you plan on doing on this Valentine’s Day.
Not much. Here's the thing: Valentine's Day bothers me. I don't like the expectation that men have to go all out, spend major cash to make their significant other happy. Some, SOME, women get all pissy if their man doesn't do what Becky's man did and that is DUMB. Cliche alert: I don't need a day to overspend on food and gifts to say I love you. I usually use the two small heart shaped cake pans we have and make cakes but since V-day falls on a Tuesday and we will both get home after 6:00, we won't do anything. And I also don't like "celebrating" "holidays" on another day. That is weird to me.

12. Are you asking for anything this Valentine’s day?
A sink free of dishes, an empty dishwasher and a piece of chocolate cake. I'm so old.

13. Give us one piece of advice of keeping a relationship strong and full of love.
Don't sweat the small stuff. Like when your husband uses the wrong phone number at Safeway and I lose out on a .10 cent gas discount. Or when there is an open packet of Fun Dip and I pick it up and spill it on the side table. Take a moment to assess the situation, decide if it will matter in 5 minutes/hours/days/months/years and then move on. Most things aren't worth getting upset over. Cooler heads prevail. And laugh. Laugh a lot. Laugh a lot every single day no matter the pain, hurt or sadness you are going through. Just laugh.

1.4. Show us a picture of what love means to you.

Just us in the madness of Times Square.

OR
Being on a beach in Kona, Hawaii. LOVE!
