What went in my belly

Mixed berry/spinach smoothie with orange juice. Whole wheat toast with 1 tbsp of Nutella

Pita chips and salsa (from Chevy's. YUM)

Snacks throughout the day. I know. I should be eating fruits and veggies for snacks but I don't like most fruits and any veggies. I'm easing into this slowly.

Extra lean turkey tacos with a touch of cheese, sour cream and salsa hidden underneath.

Apple and my dessert and final thing I ate: three pieces of dark chocolate

I went a bit over my calorie budget for the day (I blame the Nutella to go) but I burned 765 calories at the gym so the net calories is 1,069. And yes, I'm super hungry. I'm going to try to chug down a bunch of water and wait as long as I can to eat those chocolates....and maybe go to bed at 7:00 p.m.

You don't realize how much you have actually been eating until you eat a normal amount in one day. I feel so hungry but I know that as long as I can stick to this calorie budget for the next 3-4 days, my stomach will adjust and I'll be fine.

3 Week Weight Loss Challenge

If you want me to do something, turn it into a competition. I can't resist. I actually got very serious about a pop culture trivia contest at one of my high school's last week. My heart was beating out of my chest waiting to see how many questions I answered correctly. There was no prize. I just needed to win. And I did. Well, we. I had a teammate. Anyways...

I ordered and received this bathing suit on Saturday and was pretty happy with how it fit. It is a cute but functional bathing suit that I can safely wear in the ocean without the fear of a wardrobe malfunction. I can also remove the straps although I enjoy a good tan line every now and again.

Despite my happiness with the fit, I figured with just three weeks to go until we leave for Hawaii, now (actually, three weeks ago would have been better) is a good time to lose some poundage. I sent my husband a text and asked if he wanted to partake in a weight loss challenge for the next 3 weeks. We didn't really bet anything but with us, bragging rights are good enough.

I dragged my Lose It app from the depths of folder hell on my phone and put it front and center on the first screen. I went to Costco and purchased two large bags of mixed berries and a huge container of spinach for morning smoothies. I grabbed some pita chips and salsa for snacks and made sure to purchase some Dove dark chocolate for those cravings. There are only three rules that I'm giving myself:

1. Stay within your daily calorie goal. Right now that is 1600 calories a day which is 2 pounds a week. I'd like to do more but I'd take a 6 pound loss. Better than nothing!

2. No deprivation. If I want an ice cream cone, I'll go to McDonald's and get one. It is just 150 calories. My snack today includes 3 Oreo cookies that are left over from the cupcakes I made for my sister's birthday this past weekend. As long as it fits into Rule #1, it's all good.

3. Don't drink your calories. That means no Starbucks and no soda. And since Diet Soda gives me the dizzies, I'm  drinking all water, all the time. Luckily, I love water.

So that is it. No crazy restrictions. No guilt over what I should and should not be eating. Exercise every day and one cheat day (Sunday's after weighing in). My weight this morning was 1 pound less than my weight Sunday morning so I'm already making progress. And I'm feeling positive and hopeful so I might just continue this throughout the summer and see what I can do. Wouldn't it be nice if I could just keep this weight off forever? One can only hope!

*I'm taking pictures of my food today and will be posting a day in my "diet" tomorrow. You'll see that it isn't a diet at all. And you'll see how picky I am as well. Good times ahead!*

On my mind

-I had my LASIK consult today. It went well but I found out that it is best to hold off on the procedure if you plan to get pregnant within 6 months. Who knew? So better eye sight will have to wait. I did find out that the doctor is going to be in Kauai at the same time as us next month so that was weird and fun to learn!

-I had my final work obligation tonight at one of the high schools I work with. We did a pledge at Open House to ask people to stop driving distracted. I'm totally guilty of it but I'm trying to get better. I saw a kid that I worked with two years ago at the local middle school. He approached me and I was shocked that he remembered my name. He is a sophomore and doing really well. That pretty much made me night. And now, 15 work events later, I have two school site meetings tomorrow and then I am done! Go me.

-Anniversary #4 is fast approaching and I'm anxious to see what this "fruits and flowers" thing is that my husband put together.

-I held this adorable dog tonight. I'm fully Team Cat but he was so cute!

A trip down memory lane

Last year on this day, I wrote about my Mom's retirement. In a small twist of fate, she leaves today for a three week trek across the country on Amtrak! I'm so excited to hear about her adventures.

Two years ago, I said goodbye to one of my favorite shows of all time, Lost. Some people hated it. Some people gave up on it but I never missed an episode. The show provides me with fond memories and gave me a lot to think about over its 6 year run. I've actually been thinking about re-watching the series finale again because I loved it so much.

Three years ago, I did the 30 Day Shred for the first time. I can actually remember collapsing onto the couch when I was done, unable to move. I would love to do it again but all that jumping and squating hurts my old lady knees.

Four years ago, I blogged about the night I got engaged. I was just a little over a week away from my wedding and going down another memory lane to recall that wonderful night.

This time of year always makes me a bit sentimental. I look at our wedding video and pictures. I close my eyes and think back to our wedding weekend and honeymoon. I gaze at my husband adoringly until he catches me and asks me why I'm staring at him......

Ahhhh, true love.

A Small Rant

I can't stand when the family member of an accused offender talks about what a "nightmare" it is to be in the scenario. Especially when that offender is being arrested for possibly kidnapping and killing a person.

Oh, you think you have it rough? So you claim your family member is innocent and having him arrested is a nightmare. If he is innocent, he should be able to prove it, right? No sweat. He is alive. You can probably talk to him through a plateglass window in prison. He didn't do it so he'll be back at home soon enough.

How about the family of the victim? The girl who hasn't been seen in months? How about before you open your mouth and complain about how HARD this all is, you think about her family and what they are going through.

I'm not saying that being targeted and arrested in front of tv news cameras isn't challenging for the family. But it drives me nuts when an offenders family tries to get sympathy from the public because someone was arrested.

Give me a break.

Yard work is hard work

I made a date with my dad to do some major work on our front yard this past Saturday. It was hot. It was exhausting. Our yard looks like crap but will hopefully soon look better.

We tore up two bushes and planted some flowers. See that ugly spikey bush in the last "before" picture? I took that out all by myself. I'm the man. Like I said, it looks pretty ugly over there right now but I hope we can come up with a game plan and make the yard look nice again.

Yardwork is backbreakingly hard. Also, wear sunscreen. The back of my neck got scorched!

Friday, May 18, 2012 last

This was finally the morning that I woke up thinking "HOOOORAY." A break. Work has slowed down but I'm waking up at 5:10 a.m. to get to work by 7:00 a.m. and boy, am I tired. Staying up to watch NBA playoff games isn't really helping (#lakerhaterforlife, by the way) but I'm happy to welcome the weekend with open arms.

This was a pretty good week. I had some awesome farewells with adults and students that I work with. It is always hard to say goodbye to the kids I work with all year. Some I will see next year, some I won't and sometimes, that is a good thing.

I also rocked some new clothes/new outfits this week. The orange striped tank top is not work appropriate even with the cardigan over it. It slides down to reveal too much cleavage which is a bummer because it is really cute and comfortable. I know I'll be wearing it in Hawaii and to run errands on weekends during the hot summer months. The dress in the middle made me feel like Minnie Mouse. Thank goodness the belt wasn't red! I got a lot of compliments on it though and I loved wearing it. Comfortable and cute! The shirt in the picture on the right is one of my favorites except that it slides off my shoulders constantly. Maybe it is supposed to do that but at work, I don't really feel like exposing my bra straps. I also got several "You look so pretty today" and "I love your outfit!" remarks so that made me feel good. Always nice to hear something nice.

I haven't washed my hair since Wednesday night and I think my hair is finally trained to not be washed everyday. It doesn't feel greasy and I didn't even use any dry shampoo/conditioner to freshen it up. I did curl the ends this morning to give it some life but those will be flat within the next few hours.

Finally, I'm going to make a point to start commenting on blogs more. I hate the "I haven't had time" excuse because it really doesn't take that long but I need to get better at it. I blame my lack of comments on the lack of comments I leave on other blogs I read and I read a good amount of blogs. I promise to get better!!

I hope everyone has a fab weekend. I'm hitting the gym and working on the front yard this weekend so wish me luck!

LASIK: Share what you know

I'm beginning to get annoyed at putting my contact lenses in every single morning. No matter how clean I think they are, 50% of the time they aren't comfortable to wear for the first few hours I have them in. With allergy season, my eyes are dry and that is not a good thing when you wear lenses.

I know quite a few people who have had LASIK and said it was the best decision they have ever made. I admit that I'm a little scared of it but I am going to make a consultation with a highly recommended LASIK center this week. They sent me some information including the prices but I have nothing to compare it to. This place charges $1,950 per eye. Is that normal? I don't want some bargain basement, discount LASIK but I also don't want to overpay.

If anyone can share their LASIK experience, I would be very appreciative.

Retail Therapy

After Mother's Day brunch with my family, my mom took me and my sister to get a massage and facial. We had some time to kill before our appointment so I suggested we go to the mall since I wanted to take a spin around Forever 21.

Here are my purchases!

Perfect for Hawaii! (5 weeks left)

I'm wearing this today. Really cute and comfortable!

My sister had never been to F21 before and vowed never to return. The salespeople at this particular store aren't exactly friendly. But she did find a few items to purchase. She can shop throughout the whole store since she is a skinny minny while I'm stuck in the Plus Sized section but I still picked up some cute items and I'm excited to wear them! Especially that maxi dress. I can't wait until we go to Kauai!

I hope everyone had a good weekend and a nice Mother's Day!

Happy Mother's Day

My mom is amazing. Strong. Incredible. Kind. Giving. Funny. Smart. Stunning. Cheerful.

She is the kind of mother I hope I get a chance to be one day. She makes me want to be a mother. Our bond is strong as we are both the youngest siblings.

I love you endlessly mom. You are the best role model and constant reminder of what kind of person I should strive to be. Thank you for the countless lessons you have given me and the love and support that you continue to give me everyday, without question or judgement.

From Pinterest to Life

In an attempt to actually start making/using/doing the things I pin on Pinterest, I'm going to start a regular series on what I have actually tried. I have 376 pins and have never done anything with them. Sad. This is my first attempt!

I have horrid heels. My husband recoils in disgust when he sees them. I'm not such a fan either. I blogged about my love of Burt's Bees Coconut Foot Creme here and here and I just started using it again since it is flip flop weather!

As I said in my earlier posts, this stuff isn't like lotion that just rubs in. It is a bit greasy and is best applied before bed when you can throw some old socks on to cover your feet. I don't know about you but my feet get HOT at night and I find myself reaching down to remove my socks at 2 in the morning. When I saw this pin on Pinterest a while back, I thought "well, why didn't I think of that?"  Tonight after my post-workout shower, I grabbed an old pair of socks, scissors, my foot creme and a pumice stone and set out on my first Pinterest attempt.

I know these socks look dirty and gross but they aren't. They are fresh from being cleaned. I got some of the foot creme on them and it is slightly yellow-brown in color. I'm not gross. Well, my heels are. Swearsies.

Success! My feet are cool and I only partially slightly look like a dork!

Kitty Field Trip

Kitty went on a little field trip the other night. Chris picked her up and took her outside. Kitty is an indoor cat. She has snuck out the front door a few times (thanks, stupid salespeople that won't go away) but she mainly just looks out the window and hunts birds from inside. I do feel a bit bad for her that she can't explore the backyard. When it is windy outside, she is mesmerized by the branches and leaves moving and shaking in the breeze. We open the sliding glass door and she will sit there for the longest time, listening to the sounds of the birds and the outside world.

But my protective kitty momma side comes out and wants to keep her inside. Behind our house is a giant field. I worry that she would wander over there and get lost or get into a scuffle with another animal. Just the other day, I witnessed the saddest thing ever. Two dogs, one small and one medium sized, walking down the street together. They were obviously from the same house but lost. It was adorable and heartbreaking at the same time to see them playing and walking, trying to find their way home. I don't even like dogs but I got teary eyed and was very close to driving back to see if they had collars on.

Chris said we should get a cat harness so we can walk Kitty around the backyard and let her roll around in the grass. She would surely love that but I worry about fleas and diseases she isn't vaccinated for due to her indoor only status.

For now, we'll just have this adorable picture. Chris, happy he broke the rules. Kitty, neck stretched out wondering what was going on! It is already one of my favorite pictures ever.

This just happened

Nerd alert! As a fan of The Office and of Pam and Jim, I am geeking out hardcore at Jenna Fischer tweeting back to me tonight when I asked her something about the show "Girls" on HBO.

In fact, I uploaded the screen cap to Flickr so I will forever remember the time a celebrity tweeted me. Because in life, there are those small things that we need to push us into a happy place...... and I can only eat so many donuts.

What I do

I work with youth. I'm not a teacher. No summers off for me. I facilitate a peer to peer mentoring program. High school students volunteer to mentor middle school students that would be considered at risk for a variety of reasons. They aren't "bad" kids. They just need something to do after school and someone to give them some guidance and confidence.

It's a lot of work. I have up to 25 kids under my wing. They are loud. They talk a lot. They get bored (and they make sure I know about their boredom). They commit to weekly meetings for 25 weeks. I commit to it. I end sessions happy some days and upset and disappointed other days.

Today we ended our 25th session and even though I am relieved it is over, I feel sad that I won't see their faces each week anymore.

They wrote me notes. They made me cry.

Hair today, Hair gone today

I was watching The Amazing Race last night and (spoiler ahead) felt conflicted when Brenden and Rachel had the chance to "fast forward" to the Pit Stop if they shaved their heads. For a guy, it is probably a really easy decision. Is there a guy who is that attached to his hair that he wouldn't shave it? Maybe Pauly D. Or Justin Bieber. My husband shaves his head all the time so this wouldn't have been a challenge for him.

For me? Different story. Sitting here thinking about it, playing with my hair (like I always do, its a nervous twitch) I don't think there is anyway I could just shave my head on a whim. But I'm competitive. I like to win. I think being in the moment, being that much closer to winning a million bucks would help make the decision for me. Sure, there is no guarantee that you would win the money. They still had 4 other teams to beat but by jumping ahead to the Pit Stop, they would have had a HUGE lead when they left for the next leg in the morning. Or not. Pretty risky. But it is just hair. And there are wigs you can wear. And it would make a pretty good story to tell for the rest of your life, long after your hair has grown back and you barely even remember what you looked like bald.

I'm not going to say "hell yes I would have done it" because I really don't know. But I would like to think that in that moment, vanity would take a back seat to a once in a lifetime experiences. Except in the case of eating a bull's testicle or cow's brain. That is where I draw the line.
