Wailua River Cruise and Wailua Falls

On Monday night, after returning from Hanalei Beach, we headed 1.5 miles down the road to the Wailua Marina to explore the Wailua River. The Smith Family has been offering river boat tours of the river and Fern Grotto for decades. We had the last tour of the day which wasn't very crowded. The boats coming in before we left were pretty packed so I was glad we had fewer people to deal with on our tour.

So jealous of the people kayaking on the river!

An older gentleman gave a guided tour while steering the boat. It was a little hard to understand him since he was facing forward and the speakers were too great but nonetheless, I really enjoyed the relaxing 20 minute ride to Fern Grotto. Once we arrived, we left the boat and made our way back to a gorgeous location in the rain forest. There was a stage of sorts set up for us to view Fern Grotto and we listened as a guide (awesome guy!) explained the history of the area. He and his family (coworkers?) played the Hawaiian Wedding Song for us and he required everyone to kiss at the end of the song. And if you didn't have anyone to kiss, kiss the person next to you! HA! A lady walked up and kissed him on the cheek. It was a fun, friendly, happy atmosphere.

We stayed there for a total of 30 minutes before getting back on the boat and then the fun really started. The guides set up their instruments and played traditional Hawaiian music for the ride back. It was so much fun and the great commentary and conversation by the family provided a warm feeling for everyone on the boat. This is a really relaxed Kauai experience that is great for people of all ages. I really loved it.

On Tuesday during a break from swimming due to rain, we decided to take the short trip up to Wailua Falls. I was so excited to see these waterfalls and so glad Chris was going to go with me somewhere! We also had to go to Macy's because he jumped in the pool with his wallet in his pocket. Good times.

Again, so lush, so green. So beautiful.

There is a way to get down to the water although it isn't a state approved trail but we saw people climbing over guardrails and going for it. I was wearing flip flops so that wasn't really an option.

Because we are really mature, we had to do a "barfing out the waterfalls" picture

No, guy taking our picture, we don't want the waterfalls in the background. Thanks though.

We know Kauai has so many nature focused activities and I hope next time, we will take advantage of more of them. It is such a gorgeous island full of green plants and trees, beautiful beaches, quaint towns and cute restaurants. It isn't anywhere near as touristy as Maui and felt much more relaxing as well. I hope our return to the island is sooner than later.
