When discussing our upcoming trip to Hawaii with a friend, he made that comment. It made me laugh. I guess we are a bit obsessed with Hawaii. Rightfully so, of course. Hawaii is gorgeous. And living on the West Coast, it is a fairly quick plane trip. Sure, it is a bit pricey but you get what you pay for. Hawaii has never let me down.
I grew up going to Hawaii. My dad competed in the Ironman World Championship Triathlon for many years and we were lucky enough to go watch. I earned my trip to the race as a child by waking up before the sun nearly every other weekend to go watch my dad compete in local and out of state races so he could earn a spot at the Ironman. We were always THRILLED when we learned he qualified because we knew that meant a trip to Kona. The Ironman and Hawaii holds so many of my childhood memories. I get emotional just thinking about that time in my life. In 2010, I was so excited to bring Chris to Kona to watch the Ironman. My dad wasn't competing anymore but to share a huge part of my childhood with my husband was thrilling for me. And thankfully, he loved the experience. It is unlike anything else you will ever do, even as a spectator!
When I think about our trip next week as well as our 2010 trip to Kona and our honeymoon in Maui, I think about how lucky we are to visit these places. Some people will never go to Hawaii in their entire life time and I've been lucky to go several times not to mention three times in the last 4 years.
Okay, so maybe we are obsessed. But most definitely blessed.
